A Spider Story

The story probably is not as exciting to the reader than it is to me but you get to hear about it anyway.  As most  people know I am a huge arachnophobe.  I’m not quite to the point of duct taping all the doors and windows at night, but its pretty bad none the less.  I can’t touch fake ones, I can’t look at the ones on TV or in National Geographic Magazine (I don’t flip through National Geographic anymore just because they have the habit of full  page photos of spiders) I can only talk about them for so long, and if I don’t keep my mind in control I think about the most horrible encounters I may have with them.  For the record, I have attempted many times to overcome my irrational fear but I think I just make it worse.  The ONLY thing I have overcome with spiders was having to fight them playing World of Warcraft.  At first I thought I would not be able to play the game because they were seriously freaking me out (Nathan will tell you my first night playing was pretty hilarious)  I will sometimes still avoid the spiders on the game but I don’t have such a huge problem anymore.

So last night at about 2:30am I REALLY had to pee so I went into the bathroom and since it was the middle of the night I always think about encountering a spider (in my mind the spider is always somewhere on the toilet) I couldn’t check out the toilet first since I had to go so bad so I settled with a quick look around the bathroom and there was one on the wall behind me!!! I had to stay calm because I couldn’t move and unfortunately my bladder was very full.  Let me tell you what it is not an easy task to try to go faster, I certainly tried.

I hate having to kill spiders myself, I always think I will miss and they will jump out and land on me or scurry up the shoe and crawl on me. (this is giving me the hebeejeebieswriting about it)  But I couldn’t let it stay there because I would never go back to sleep.  It took me a bit but I killed it… and I still couldn’t go to sleep for a while from paranoia and when I did I had horrible spider dreams.

I am going to try my hardest to be calm around Ahnna so she does not inherit this beyond ridiculous phobia.  Nathan doesn’t mind them at all and will often get irritated with me if I show any emotion about it. However he does not like snakes at all so I just ask him how he would feel if there were snakes in our apartment as often as there are spiders… I get no response from that.

Oh my goodness, you are NOT alone! I hate, hate, HATE spiders. I got lucky in the husband department because Mark hates them too. He may even hate them more than me, because he can’t go near them to kill them. I get called in to save the day, because I would rather see its guts going down the toilet, than hope it just goes back outside. Ick!
